Gun News - Background checks are up, firearm sales still strong

By Gary Tucker
In April, the USPSA Area 6 Championships were held at South River Gun Club. Junior competitor Blake Manning was there and one of 351 registered competitors at the event. While the stages were very challenging, Blake came in 3rd in his division and was the fastest junior on the infamous stage 2 “Field of Steel”!

During the weekend of May 16-17, Blake competed in Jackson, MS at the Mississippi Classic. Blake was looking forward to this particular competition because he has a lot of family and friends back home in both Louisiana and Mississippi. He had a great match, and finished in First Place in the Open Class, C Division and won High Overall Junior. Way to go Blake! Next on Blake’s schedule will be the South Carolina State Championship Match at the end of May. Bulls Eye Marksman Gun Club is a proud sponsor of Blake and we wish him well in the Palmetto State.

Free Gun Cleaning Seminar – June 15 Sometimes cleaning your firearms can be a confusing and tedious task. Some guns are more difficult to field strip to the level necessary to get them clean. The seemingly endless selection of cleaning chemicals, oils and supplies can also offer a challenge when it comes to picking the right product for the job at hand. So, how do you figure out which equipment, solvents and oils are needed?

Most all companies that sell these products will claim that their product will do the best job of removing certain fouling and metal build-up in the barrel of your firearm. One thing for sure is that not everything out there does an equal job of cleaning, at least not with the same amount of effort.

To help simplify the cleaning process and answer your questions, Bulls Eye Marksman will host a free seminar on Monday, June 15 at 6:00 PM EDT. Bring your gun and your cleaning kit and supplies. We will have personnel on hand to show you the proper methods and materials to use to keep that shooting iron of yours clean and functioning properly.

Basic Handgun Classes:
Classes are now open for enrollment. On the First and Third Monday of every month, we will be holding a basic hand gun class from 6:00 until 9:00 PM.

This month, on June 15 there will be a FREE Gun Cleaning Seminar instead of the usual handgun training.

Glock Match
June 6, 10AM to 2PM
On Saturday June 6, 2009 we will be hosting the monthly Glock Match from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

This is the 3rd in a series of three matches. Don't forget that to be eligible for the drawing for a free Glock pistol you must participate in at least two of the three matches in a series. Good luck to all match participants.

Assault Weapons
by Gary Tucker

Rarely does any “news” program on the airways these days go from start to finish without the mention of so-called “assault weapons”.

It seems that most media reports go for a certain level of sensationalism and fear, rather than worrying about the facts. In an effort to help clarify and distinguish between a semi-auto firearm verses a fully-automatic firearm, the NSSF has put together a simple to understand explanation and video at the following link:

http://www.nssf.org/media/FactSheets/Semi-Auto_Background.cfm

Don’t let the anti-gunners continue to misrepresent the facts associated with responsible gun use and ownership. If you still have not joined the NRA, please do so. Bulls Eye Marksman Gun Club is an NRA recruiter. Simply click here or on the NRA logo at the bottom of this newsletter to get your membership process started.

Data just released by the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System (NICS) indicates that the number of reported background checks for April 2009 were almost 1.3 million, representing just over a 30 percent increase when compared to April 2008. Federal Law requires background checks for all individuals who wish to purchase a new or used firearm from a federally licensed retail dealer.

The increase in April continues a six month upward trend and indicates that firearms sales are still strong. While background check statistics are an indicator of sales levels, they do not represent actual sales. A check does not always result in a sale and more than one firearm may be purchased on a single check.
